I realised that I missed a significant anniversary of James' passing last month, but wanted to mark it in some way. I sat with James in the last year of primary school (Mrs Whites' class), though drifted apart in secondary school. Mrs White recognised that I struggled to make friends and so put me on a table with 3 others to give me a little push! James was an important friend at an important time for me. We were all shocked when we learnt of his passing, but only now with children of my own can I begin to comprehend quite how devastating his loss must have been. It is humbling to learn something of Mr and Mrs Johnson's work with the meningitis trust through the years, and the incredible fundraising done in James' name. As a doctor myself now, I can attest to how much the awareness and treatment of meningitis and septicaemia more widely has changed in the 30 years since this tragedy, due in large part to charities such as the meningitis trust. I am certain that lives have been saved by their work.
